Sports car speeding down blurry street

In this day and age, sporty performance and styling simply isn’t enough. The number of sports cars on the market continue to rise, and in an effort to compete, automakers are introducing new features that help to set their sports car offering apart from the rest. One way that many manufacturers are doing this is by adding a Sport Mode that, as the name suggests, makes the performance of the vehicle just that much sportier. To give you a better idea about what the mode is, let’s look at its features and benefits.

Although most sports cars do provide a sporty performance whether or not they are placed in Sport Mode, the special mode really helps to ramp up the vehicle’s capabilities. The mode is typically activated by a button or knob if there are a few other driving modes, or by flipping through some menus on the screen of the infotainment system. As soon as it’s turned on, certain systems are adapted accordingly.

Each Sport Mode is different. While some may give you access to the full range of engine power, others may just adjust the throttle response and tighten up the steering. It’s all really dependent on how the car drives outside of Sport Mode, and how the manufacturer has the mode programmed. Here are a few common capabilities that you can expect to see from sports cars that are equipped with Sport Mode.

What Features Does Sport Mode Provide?

  • Increased throttle response
  • Faster acceleration
  • Higher-RPM shifts
  • Stiffer suspension
  • Tighter steering
  • Increased horsepower and torque

Pros and Cons of Sport Mode-Equipped Cars

As you can see from the list of capabilities, there are quite a few benefits that can come from turning Sport Mode on. The level of performance that can be achieved is second to none, and it makes any car even more fun to drive. There is, unfortunately, one downside to turning Sport Mode on. Capabilities such as faster acceleration and increased horsepower and torque put more strain on the engine, which, in turn, leads to higher fuel consumption. The decrease in fuel efficiency is ultimately the reason that Sport Mode is a feature that can be turned on and off. It wouldn’t be practical as a full-time system.
