Oil is the lifeblood of your vehicle. It properly lubricates the engine components to fight friction and the buildup of heat, which can cause severe damage. By getting the oil changed in your vehicle regularly, you’ll help keep the engine running smoothly for years to come.

Whether it’s been a while since your last oil change or you’ve noticed your vehicle acting funny on the road, it could be time to get your car an oil change. But how do you know it’s time? Take a look at the signs below.

Is It Time for an Oil Change?

Maintenance light

Some cars have an oil change reminder or a maintenance light that turns on once you’ve driven a set interval of miles. Depending upon your vehicle’s make and the oil used in the engine, that interval can range from 3,000 to 10,000 miles. But when the light does come on, it’s best to get the vehicle in for an oil change.

The proof is on the stick

An easy way to see if you need an oil change is to check the dipstick. By removing it, wiping it clean, re-inserting it, and removing it again, you’ll be able to see how much oil is currently in your engine. Anything between the minimum and maximum markings shows that you’re okay. But if it’s below the minimum, it’s time for a change.

While you’re checking the dipstick, pay attention to the color. If it’s clear and amber colored, it’s fairly fresh. If it’s dark in color, then the oil is used and dirty. If you notice the oil is milky in color, that could indicate a leak from a different engine component, which you want to get inspected right away.

You can also rub a little bit of the oil on the dipstick between your fingers. If the oil feels gritty, that can be bits of carbon and dirt that are not being caught by the oil filter.
